After the Revolution of 1821, Greece, following international trends, came under the influence first of the neoclassical style, then of the medieval revival, folklorism, and finally eclecticism. As Byzantium had survived in some forms of our popular architecture, there were many proclaiming that a truly "Greek" architecture would only be found in imitations of traditional popular forms. They could not understand that in doing so, they were betraying tradition itself, which bequeaths values rather than forms.
